Difference Between TJ Maxx, Marshalls, & HomeGoods

If you're a shopper like we are, you may have wondered what the exact difference between TJ Maxx, Marshall's, and HomeGoods is. For starters, they are all owned by the same entity, TJX Companies. The difference are their offerings. These are three of our favorite stores, and what we like most about them is being able to use a gift card from one store at any of the three.

Marshall's and TJ Maxx offer relatively the same items. The majority of them have a men's clothing section, a women's clothing section, a shoe and bag section, and a smaller home decor section towards the back.

The brands TJMaxx, Homegoods, and Marshalls carry include:

  • Calvin Klein
  • Michael Kors
  • Ralph Lauren
  • Kenneth Cole
  • Nicole Miller
  • Vera Wang
  • Anne Klein
They have the top names in design, they just have them for a lesser price when compared to other department stores or purchasing directly from the seller. The brands are also carried into the home decor sections as well. You can find Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Vera Wang items in the home section including bedding, kitchenware, and tableware.

HomeGoods

HomeGoods, is different from Marshall's and TJ Maxx because it is exclusively for TJX home items. At HomeGoods, you can find Royal Albert tea-ware and tableware, Nicole Miller decorative office supplies, Calvin Klein bedding, kids decor and more.

Homegoods focuses on items for the home. The store has an enormous food section, which includes spices, oil, teas, coffee, pasta, sauces, preserves and dry goods. Within the vicinity of its food section is always the bakeware section and china dish aisle. Toward the center of the store, there's always the children's toy aisles bordered by throws, pillows, baskets, and more. The back of HomeGoods stores usually house a massive towel section, bathroom accessories and toiletry items. Depending on the location, you'll find office supplies, frames and paintings in the northwest corners of the store. The back wall usually sports bedding sets and the area to the western end of the store features furniture and lamps.

TJMaxx

TJMaxx is the more high-end version of all three stores. It focuses more on clothing items and offers a large jewelry department with name brand watches, earrings and necklaces inside cases. It has a major handbag department and a small shoe department. They do offer home goods like candles, dishes, glasses, bedding and pet supplies along the back section of the store in verticle asiles.

Marshalls

You can say that Marshalls is known for having the most affordable offerings compared to TJMaxx. It has a large shoe department, which is one of the signature staples of the store. It does carry home goods like bed and bath accessories, clothing and pet supplies. However, they often do not have a designated jewelry department. Instead, they sell less expensive earrings and items in boxes located on a round or rectangular table near the registered or by the front door.

Takeaway

If we had to name one things that makes them each different it is that Marshalls has a large shoe department. TJMaxx has a beautiful jewelry department and HomeGoods exclusively sells for-the-home items. It does not have a clothing section.

Of all three stores, HomeGoods has the largest candle section, which includes imported candles from England, Italy, and even India. All three sellers are some of the most affordable providers of imported goods from around the world. From foods to linens, to bed & bath beauty products, you can find anything here at a great price.

Overall, the difference is that TJ Maxx seems to be the more high-end of all three stores. It carries most of the same things that Marshall's carries, and their stores are laid out in almost the same ways in terms of the products they sell. HomeGoods is their exclusive home decor an item provider.

  1. I've noticed that, after a period of time, if a product doesn't sell at TJ Maxx, it will show up later on the shelves at Marshall's at a reduced price, designated by a red price sticker. So, if you saw something you liked at TJ Maxx but didn't immediately buy it, then returned later only to discover TJ Maxx no longer had it, then head over to Marshall's. It's like Marshall's is the "toss table" for T.J. Maxx.

  2. Michael Kors is spelled wrong. Not Coors.
