In this very believable role, Benedict takes us through the life of mathematician Alan Turning, who was handpicked as one of the few individuals to work on "The Enigma", a sophisticated machine design by the German military, which coded every bit of communication about pending attacks on enemy forces. At the time, Enigma was considered to be unbreakable; using mathematicians and scientists, the English military fought a futile intellectual battle against the communications produced by the machine, decoding each message by hand in vain.
Of all of these bright minds, Alan Turning emerged with a revolutionary idea to create a machine called "Christopher" using what would later be called "turning mechanics" to decode all messages instantly.
Benedict Cumberbatch eloquently brings to life this role, as we watch Turning trying figure out a way to make his machine work while still keeping military funding for his project; at the same time, Turning, who is an awkward fellow with unusual tendencies, learns his way through the art of friendship and grows into a man able to communicate with others and accept their help and input on the project, something he once could not do.
Using his irresistible powder blue eyes, Benedict Cumberbatch makes you fall in love with Alan Turning's beautiful mind and his pure soul. This film opens up our eyes to the devastating civil injustices our predecessors faced and how far civil rights have come; ultimately, it also shows us how much more work needs to be done.
This movie opens the doors to the public of this fascinating operation to win the war with intimate details on the lives of the individuals involved in cracking the Enigma Code. From the beginning of the project all the way until the tragic end of Turnings life, this movie will have you attached to each character by the strings of your heart.
We give this film a full 5 star rating for having chosen the most talented cast member for each role, its immaculate wardrobe design, which perfectly describes the era, and for its directorial guidance that allowed us to feel as if we were actually a part of this whole mission. It completely mutes everything around the viewer and turns the screen into part of their world.
