Back to School for Pre K Students

The back-to-school routine is a little different for pre-K students. Your student will need to have a new set of physicals and immunizations and be emotionally ready for the new chapter in their lives. School supply lists will also be very different compared to the new school supply lists for kindergartners through eighth grade. Without further ado here's what your child will need.

Medical

The first thing your child will need is a physical from his or her pediatrician along with an immunization record. The school board will usually provide you with a checklist to present to your pediatrician, and your pediatrician's office will have to check off the results of your physical and include any comments about your child's health that are relevant to the start of the new school year.

In order to start school at any grade, your child will have to have an up-to-date immunization record. Our immunization checklist gives you a good informational base for all of the vaccines your child will need from birth up to six years; we've made a printable for your convenience.

By the age of four, your child will most likely already have all of the necessary immunizations up to the age of three. Be sure to take your child to their pediatrician to receive their four-year-old vaccinations, which include Varicella, Polio, MMR, and DTaP.

Emotional

Before your child starts school, be sure to ease them into the process of school by talking about it throughout the day. Tell your child about school, about what they will experience, and who the teacher will be. Teach your child about respect, friendship, and sharing.

Be sure to accurately judge your child's behavioral personality, and address this to the teacher before the start of school. Many parents often don't think their child has a behavioral problem, because no parent wants to believe that their child is not behaving the way they're supposed to, however, it is best to take your child to behavioral specialist if you feel that something is not right to avoid expulsion in school because of ongoing behavioral issues.

Visits

Many schools that offer a pre-K program will also offer parent orientation, student orientation, and home visits from the teacher. Be sure to have an accurate copy of the schedule for these programs so that your child will be able to attend school as most of these are mandatory.
