The Expenses of Moving Pt 1

Moving can be a huge expense; from paying movers to issuing funds to secure your new place, it can all add up. Here's what you can expect in part 1 of our breakdown, which covers:

Moving Companies, Rentals, and Labor

Most moving companies will move your entire household's belongings for a set price, usually between $3,000 and $5,000. When opting for a full package like this it will not be necessary to pay by the hour and it will include the following:

  • A labor force
  • Packaging of your items into boxes
  • Dismantling of your furniture if necessary (they may not put it back together or put your things away in the new home.)
  • The transportation and delivery of your items to your new address
Alternately you can opt for transporting and moving your items yourself with help from movers. In these cases, you will usually pay between $50-$100 per hour for labor services which will pack or unpack your items. Expect 2-4 movers to arrive, and they will help you load your truck. You will be responsible for transporting and delivering your items to your new location.

A rental truck will run between $19.99-$25.99 per day. However, you will have to pay for the following:
  • Insurance for the truck
  • Per mile expenses (usually $0.19)
  • Gas and refilling the truck when you are done
  • Extra items like dollys, car transport systems, blankets, boxes, tape or any other items you may need.
For a 2 bedroom apartment you can expect to pay the following:
  • $150 for 2 hours of labor if opting for just labor help
  • $3,000-$5,000 for a professional moving company to do everything
  • $600 for a 14" Uhaul rental
  • $800 in Gas for a 14" Uhaul rental going approximately 400 miles
