VMA's Review, Scoop and Highlights

Where do I start. We don't necessarily think that the VMAs broadcast was very entertaining this year, in fact it was rather awkward and lazy. Starting with the host, Miley Cyrus just isn't a very enigmatic person. We think she tries to be, but she's just not the type person that can draw in and excite a crowd. Presenters this year were a bit lazy and uncoordinated, and some performances were just lacking in oomph. Here we go:

Host: When it comes to racy outfits and controversial actions, Cyrus is all there, however it almost seems as if it's a little too much, borderline begging for attention and for people to take her as a "controversial artist", however, all we get out of it is half naked, loud, boring person onstage trying to amp up a crowd of fans and other artists who just don't find her that interesting.

On the side of the hosting, it really broke the show for us because it didn't excite us for upcoming performances or appearances by artist.

Presenters: We don't know if there was a lot of censorship for this show or not, all we know is that the presenters this year were uncoordinated and very lazy. Not knowing what they were going to say, whose turn it was to speak, amping up the crowd for the announcement - all of these things were just an enormous fail in terms of production.

That is, however, with the exception of Jared Leto. In everything we have seen him do, singing, acting, presenting, he seems to own it. He was one of the only presenters of the night to draw in the cheers of the crowd before he even got one word in, whether or not that's because he's our new Joker is unknown, but even if that was the case, that just goes to show that he is so good at whatever he does and it follows him everywhere.

And yes, playing the Joker has become a pop culture honor. To us, it's the equivalent of saying you're our new president, our new spokesperson, it has become a matter of public service, of which we expect the highest quality of work, which I'm sure he'll deliver.

Speeches: Speeches this year were short, not very interesting ... that is with the exception of two in particular; Nicki Minaj took to the stage to accept her award for Best Hip-Hop Video of the year and in the process she called Cyrus out about an interview she did with the New York Times, where she supposedly badmouthed Minaj. Nikki ended her speech by saying "now back to this bitch over here .... Miley what's good?"

And the only other speech of notice was a complete 0 to 100, "that escalated quickly" kind of experience. Yes, Kanye announced that he would be running for president in 2020. He spoke about other things in his speech, not that any of it was understandable. Kanye may be a very talented person, but he has a difficult time expressing himself using words, causing him to just rant about different topics for long stretches of time. Although, I guess if you really listened you may have understood his point somewhere along the line.

Basically, he said, "listen to the kids", "listen to the kids", "listen to the kids", and then he questioned whether or not he would have gone on stage to interrupt Taylor Swift's speech a few years ago. He also mentioned something about MTV using images of his career to garner ratings for the VMAs and a whole mess of things about going against "The Man". It's Kanye, I think you get the point.

Performances: Sadly, none of the performances seem to have been up to par with the exception of 1 1/2. The Weekend performed, but the lead singer's voice was strained and it seemed it was difficult for him to hit those amazing notes he always does in his music. The opening act, a performance of Nicki Minaj, was just more sequenced outfits that it was art; the inclusion of Taylor Swift seem to amp up the crowd, but they were both pretty bland.

Justin Bieber didn't seem like he was all there with his performance. We noticed that there were bits of hesitation in the moves that he was making, and he just didn't seem that interested in his performance. This was our take on it until we saw him cry at the end, which we later found out was because he was honored that people cheered for him during this VMA appearance, when the last time he was at the VMAs he was booed. So we think most of what we saw during the performance was more him second-guessing himself than actually being disinterested, and it didn't help that his ex was siting front and center, so, we'll let him have that.

Our favorite performance of the evening did not even take place within the stadium. It was Demi Lovato's performance on Broadway. It was hot, it was live, it was sensual, it had props... that was the most amazing performance of the night.

The only other performance of notice that night for us was that of Macklemore, which also took place on the street. It was gitty, it was hyped, it was very energetic. But we're just not a fan of that particular song. But we'll let him have that.

Pink was also very disappointed in the VMAs this year, tweeting about how she was very disheartened about the fact that most of the music that was performed wasn't inspiring enough to save someone's life or help people cope with this crazy world; she never mentioned any names in particular, however, Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato and others took to Twitter to call her out and defend the less then average show they put on. While we think Demi Lovato did great, I think the rest are just pretty pissed off that they didn't do their best, they were being mediocre and someone called them out on it.
