Putin's Rise to Power
Most of the world's fascination with Vladimir Putin comes from the fact that he was never really meant to be president in the first place; he was not a politician, in fact, he was a bureaucrat, a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB that extensively trained other KGB agents on how to be well, members of one of the most elite forces in the world. By all statistical standards, Vladimir Putin probably would have risen to be a general in the military, had he not resigned from the KGB in 1991 after the organization staged a coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, something he wanted no part of. From 1991 until 1999, When the then president Boris Yeltsin appointed him prime minister and subsequently president of the Russian Federation after Yeltsin decided to resign, Vladimir Putin's career seem to expand at an unprecedented rate of speed. It's this somewhat Rags to Riches story that brings Vladimir Putin to the forefront of everyone's fascination with these kinds of tales, not to mention the fact that not only does he have a good understanding of the Common Man because he was not a politician his entire life, but this man is literally an ex-KGB militant who could probably kill someone with his thumb, leading to his “badassness”.
Vladimir Putin's Badass Personality
Speaking of badassness, Vladimir Putin has made a name for himself for being absolutely unafraid to tell it like it is. If he has an opinion, you're going to hear it. He is not politically correct at all, and has been seen and known to humiliate people when they deserve it.
Putin and the Factory Debacle
On one such occasion, when a one-factory town’s factory halted production because the millionaire owners refuse to pay wages and provide a suitable working environment for their employees, and the employees took to the streets to protest, Putin himself went straight to the factory and held a meeting with the board members and practically forced them to sign a document promising to bring the factory back to working condition and to pay up to $1.5 in unpaid wages and called them cockroaches for scattering to get things done when they heard he was coming. If you think that's bad ass, keep in mind that he did all of this in front of a camera crew that broadcasted the meeting on live television so that the entire country could see just how pissed off he was and to warn other millionaire factory owners to not do the same thing. Oh, and at the end, he singles out a guy who tried to skip out on signing, forced him to sign and then told him to give him his pen back!
Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel
On another occasion, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, refused to shake the hand of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, one of Putin’s “greatest admirers”, Vladimir Putin took the chance to then humiliate Merkel at a press conference by stating “No matter what you do on your wedding night, you’ll get fucked.” Now, while the comment was in response to Germany's position with NATO, speculations arose that part of his reason for choosing those exact words were because Angela Merkel is a woman, and a sexual connotation would be no doubt offensive.
His taunts at her have been long-standing, about 9 years ago during their first meeting, the Russian president brought a black Labrador with him to meet the chancellor, who is cynophobic (afraid of dogs). Putin denies claims that he did it intentionally…..

Vladimir Putin: Jack of All Trades
The biggest attraction that people have with Vladimir Putin is the fact that he is considered to be one of the most interesting people in the world, and it's because of how he runs his presidency through the lens of a camera. Vladimir Putin is considered to be Russia's first “celebrity” president. Whether it's for propaganda purposes, or for some sort of democratic transparency, almost everywhere he goes, a camera follows. So whenever he's touring a business, a location, or a place of interest, cameras are following him. And Vladimir Putin seems to be the type of person that is interested in trying new things whenever he sees them, whether that’s feeding baby animals, taking part in the tagging of whales to contribute to the conservation of marine life, to testing a rock climbing wall at a newly-built camp.
He's also a black belt in martial arts. Putin is a pilot, an outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter - anything that there is to do on this planet, it seems that Vladimir Putin has already done it. In no other country on earth will you openly see a president so hands-on with the daily affairs of his country And still find time to add hundreds of skills to his resume.
Putin's Love for the Camera
As mentioned above, everywhere Vladimir Putin goes, a camera follows him, and he loves it, and because he's so visually accessible, people get to see more of him than they do most other presidents. During his initial few years as president, he had his hands all over the broadcasting schedules and his country, doing a weekly show on Thursdays with one of his favorite journalists where he would answer interview questions in order for the people to see more of him.
President Putin's Dog Request at Annual Direct Line
The president has also launched an initiative that really hasn't been seen anywhere else, he holds an Annual Direct-Line television special that spends 3 hours where millions of Russian citizens can submit questions to the president from anything regarding politics to a mother's wish to have a dog. That last part was interesting, so I'll elaborate. During one of his direct line Special, A child called in asking the president if he could convince his father to let his mother have a dog. The president obliged in a most adorable sympathetic plea to the father on live television asking him to allow the child's mother to have a dog.
I mean come on, the guy does have some charm to him regardless of his position on political affairs.
Boris please be so kind and let your wife buy a dog. It's the sort of thing that strengthens the family. 0.16 -1:12 sec.
I mean come on, the guy does have some charm to him regardless of his position on political affairs.
And there you have it, these are some of the top reasons why Vladimir Putin is considered to be one of the Most Fascinating People of this decade.
