Travel Guide: Cultural Museums Around Germany

Europe has always been a dream destinations for most people, and why not; from cultural museums in Germany to ancient site of Rome, it's an amazing place? The sights, the culture, the food, the people, are all worth traveling for.

Germany is one European country that should be visited not just because of the beers, but also because of its Museums that are just one for the books!

Here’s my list of the top four museums in Germany that you shouldn’t miss:

The Museum Island

Aptly named as so, this UNESCO Heritage site houses five museums, which are already artworks in themselves. The museums built on the island include:

  • Pergamon Museum
  • Bode-Museum
  • Neues Museum
  • Alte Nationalgalerie
  • Altes Museum
Apart from the German culture it represents, the museums also have prized possessions such as the Bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, as well as a skull of a Neanderthal Man.

These World-Class Museums are a must-see in Berlin. The sites offer "Walking Tours" facilitated to further explore the structures and its displays. The good news here is that Berlin has "Package Tour Passes" for its visitors. For instance, the Three-day Museum Pass entitles the card holder entry to 50 Museums in the German Capital for 24 Euros (12 Euros for Students).

You'll get to explore all of the Museums you want to visit with just this pass card (unless you plan to do your museum-hopping for more than three days, in which case you can no longer use the card as it expires on the fourth day).

After the tour, I am pretty sure you will get hungry, so, head to Kofler & Kompanie, an authentic German restaurant near the Museum Island. Dinners come back to this restaurant for the authentic taste, and of course great desserts!

Topography of Terror

This museum is not for the faint-hearted. This, however, reflects Germany’s past through the terrifying moments its constituents have gone through. It is built on the former site of the Gestapo Headquarters.

To take your mind off what you may have seen in the famed indoor/outdoor museum, head to Curry at the Wall, which is just nearby. It prides itself with its vegan dishes and curry meals that are terrific and to-die-for.

   Currywurst Museum

Meat-lovers unite! This one-of-a-kind museum in Germany is tantalizing to the taste buds as it does not only give museum-goers a run through the history of curried sausages, it also gives tourists a taste of it! It is open daily, and charges 11 Euros for Adults, and 7 Euros for Children seven years old and above. Kids six and below can enter free of charge.

If the samplings are still not enough to keep your hunger at bay, head on over at Entrecote, where you’d get to experience Paris in Berlin through the delightful dishes that they serve.

A Museum said to be a reflection of the extreme emotions of its artist. Once you see the artworks, you would feel as if you were transported back in time, as you get to feel the emotions of those depicted in the artworks.  The intensity of the expressions of the people depicted in the sculptures are truly reminiscent of the horror the poor may have encountered at that time. Gain entrance to this museum for 6 Euros.

After your tour, you may want to relax in a restaurant with a piping hot bowl of Thai Noodle Soup. Aside from the Pho, The Thai Elephant Restaurant also serves a good King Prawn in Garlic Dish best paired with a steaming hot bowl of white rice.

The Culture and artistry of Germany can never be denied with these museums that speak of the country’s past and whisper a clue of what could possibly lie ahead of this wonderful country in the distant future. Do tell us about your trips too! Tweet us @HappyHousemaid with #TravelGermany
